There was indeed a Cotton Club in Miami
Beach, at least during 1957. This photo was accompanied
by the following caption, dated January 7, 1957:
"View of the swank Cotton Club where
four Buick-working armed bandits, their faces and heads covered
by money bags with eye-slits, robbed the club of an estimated $36,000 in cash shortly after closing."
This photo shows Lonnie Sattin backstage
with Liberace, who also performed at the Miami Beach Cotton
Club in 1957.
Maurice and Gregory Hines got their showbiz
start at the Cotton Club Revue in Miami Beach in 1957.
When the 11-year-old Hines kids got to Miami to appear in the Cotton Club show, they took along a
$75-a-week tutor to help them with their school work.
Gregory Hines ultimately played Sandman
Williams in Francis Ford Coppola's 1984 Cotton Club movie.
The Cotton Club in Miami Beach has long
since been razed to make way for urban development,
but the memories live on.
